Try five simple ear-training exercises for pitch direction, scale notes, melody memory, singing, and musical listening.

Ear training becomes easier to maintain when you know what to practice. These five exercises give beginners a simple way to work on listening skills without needing a complicated setup.

1. Identify whether a note is higher or lower

Play or listen to two notes one after another. Decide whether the second note is higher, lower, or the same as the first.

Start slowly and focus on hearing the direction of the pitch before trying to name the notes.

2. Practice notes within a scale

Listen to a familiar major scale and pay attention to each note's position. In movable-Do solfege, the notes are commonly called Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, and Ti, followed by Do again.

Practice recognizing a few scale notes at a time. Add more only when you can identify the current group more reliably.

3. Sing back a short melody

Listen to a short musical phrase, pause, and try to sing it back. Start with just three or four notes.

Compare your attempt with the original. Notice where the melody rises, falls, repeats, or ends.

4. Listen for repeated notes

Listen to a sequence of notes and notice when the same pitch appears more than once. Repeated notes can be easy to overlook when the rhythm changes.

Try clapping the rhythm or humming the sequence to help keep track of what you hear.

5. Work out a familiar song

Choose a simple song and focus on one short phrase. Hum it, then try to find the notes using your voice or an instrument if available.

It is fine to use a reference pitch or check your result. The goal is to improve your listening and reasoning, not to make the task unnecessarily difficult.

A simple daily routine

Try spending a few minutes on pitch direction, a few minutes on scale-note recognition, and a few minutes singing or working out a melody.

Track which exercises feel difficult and return to them regularly. Goumora can help you practice note recognition with interactive exercises.
